Over the past two years, there really have been no limits as to where we'll put on a Secret Show. For instance, last summer, we had Rilo Kiley play at a run down bowling alley in Los Angeles. Then, a few weeks later, we convinced Peter, Bjorn and John to perform in the basement of a church in Philadelphia. Yet, for all the random places we have turned up over the years, for one reason or another, we have never thrown a party inside of a straight up dance club.

But all of that changed this past Tuesday, when electronic music pioneer Moby put on a marathon DJ set in Chicago, in front of a few hundred fans. After years of playing arenas with a backing band, Moby returned to his club roots this past year with his latest album, Last Night, and in the process, once again proved to be one of the most exciting DJs around. That much was clear this past week, when the diminutive star manned the turntables the SmartBar with his friends Jacques Renault and Justin Miller, as well as DFA associate Holy Ghost!

The hand-picked openers took turns warming up the crowd (and surely managed to surprise a few of them, with some of the racy songs they decided to drop into their set). But from there, they cleared the way for Moby, who absolutely blew away everyone's expectations. Seriously, we know that the guy has been at this DJing thing for a while, but the crowd at SmartBar completely lost it as he mixed classic house tracks with crowd favorite like Pulp's "Common People" and Basment Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?"

The fans weren't the only ones enjoying themselves, either: After spinning for about an hour, Moby pulled aside a member of the SmartBar staff and told him that he wanted to DJ well into the morning. In the end, he and his crew kept the party going until past 2:00 AM, at which point the sweat covered fans poured out onto the street. This was both one of the longest and most memorable Secret Shows in recent memory, and we'd like to thank Moby, Mute, Holy Ghost!, Jacques Renault, Justin Miller and the staff at SmartBar for making it happen.

As always, we'll see you at the next show!
