Sometimes the world can feel like a very big place. For instance, when you are young and one of your best friends moves to the other side of the country. Then, rather suddenly, a few thousand miles can feel like the greatest distance on Earth. But just as often the world can also feel rather small, like it did this past Wednesday. That is when a group of charming Frenchmen took the stage at a bar in the middle of a shopping center in Kansas CIty. Now, this being the heartland, you wouldn't think that an electro-rock band from Paris would exactly draw a rabid crowd.
But think again. When Phoenix—which includes singer Thomas Mars, bassist Deck D'Arcy, and guitarists Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai—took the stage at The Record Bar in Kansas City, there were 300 screaming fans waiting for them. "History is being made tonight!" Mars said, looking out at the crowd, and he was right. This was in fact their first time playing in Kansas City, despite being a band for almost 10 years.
So they made the most of it, playing several songs off their new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, including its lead single "Lisztomania," which quickly got the crowd dancing. But this night wasn't all about new material. No, Phoenix also reached deep into their catalog to perform their version of "Playground Love," a song that Mars originally performed in 2001 with the band Air on the soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides. (A film that Thomas' lady, Sofia Coppola, just so happened to direct).
It was a nice moment for a night that already started strong, thanks in large part to Amazing Baby—who not only opened the show but are sharing the stage with Phoenix during their current US tour. (If you haven't heard their new album Rewild, you need to get it ASAP.). Eventually, the guys closed things out with their current hit "1901" and, just like that, another unforgettable Secret Show came to a close.
We just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made this things happen. That means the folks at Glassnote, the staff at the Record bar, the team at Shangri-La, and, of course, the members of Phoenix and Amazing Baby. Also, a big thanks goes out to our sponsor Citi Forward by MySpace for making these shows free to everyone. Remember, if you want to get VIP treatment at the next show, you gotta sign up for the Citi Forward by MySpace card.
Thanks again everyone. We’ll see you at the next show…
