You know that song "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House"? If not, you should. It's a great song made by an even greater band, the Brooklyn-based dance rock group LCD Soundsystem. In it, frontman James Murphy sings about how he once asked the legendary French DJs to come over to his apartment and spin at a party he was having in his living room.
Obviously, that never really happened. But what if it did? Seriously, what if two of the world's most reknowned DJs showed up at some dude's apartment, plugged in their light show, and threw one of the greatest parties of all time? The answer is simple: It would have been a lot like this Secret Show, which happened to feature electro wunderkinds MSTRKRFT spinning inside a free art space on Chicago's South Side. Better known as Co-Prosperity Sphere, this unique venue is also home to a collection of artists who regularly show their work here (and, in some cases, live in the apartments directly above the main floor). By no means was this your typical venue, but it was a pretty suiting place to have Jesse and Alex from MSTRKRFT perform a sweltering set in support of their recently released album, Fist Of God. Though they wouldn't hit the stage until later that evening, the duo brought their friend Bird Peterson to warm things up. Alternating between old school hip hop and vintage techno, Peterson got the crowd moving early, especially when he decided to dust off "Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. (Sadly, though, no one in the crowd showed up weaing old school Krazie Bone-style braids. Hey, you can’t win ‘em all.) After about an hour, Peterson thanked the crowd and, just like that, the plasma screens at the front of the room lit up. From there the MSTRKRFT guys took the stage, clinked their bottles of Crown Royale, and spent the next hour blowing everyone's mind. The thing you have to understand about the Co-Prosperity Sphere is that, while it is techincally an art gallery, it is also about the size of someone's living room, and everyone in attendence treated this like one big house party. As the duo went from their latest single "Bounce" (during which, the excitable crowd made it seem like they were going to cave in the floor) to their re-mix of Justice's "D.A.N.C.E.," they rarely let up. Throughout their hour-and-a-half performance, the two of them seemed more like a rock band than a couple of guys twiddling around with a knobs. And, in turn, it wasn’t that odd to see a few of the 200 people inside actually crowd surf during their set. To end out the night the guys in MSTRKRFT wound up playing one of the greatest rock songs of all time: "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. The kids inside practically exploded and, just as the final notes rang out, one last crowd surfer managed to float atop a bunch of sweaty hands. It was incredible and we want to start by thanking MSTRKRFT, as well as Bird Peterson, Undercover Management, the people at Empty Bottle Presents, and finally, the owners of Co-Prosperity Sphere. Also, a big thanks should go out to our new sponsor, Citi Forward. Not only are they making shows like this free over the next year, they are also allowing you the chance to skip the line in the future. If you want to learn how to do so,check out their profile above. As for us, we'll see you at the next show... |
