Ah, the winter of 2007. It was a very different time for Lily Allen. Back then, the then-relatively unknown songstress was just beginning to make a name for herself in the world. She had just released her excellent first album, Alright, Still, and had quickly garnered a reputation for being the kind of no-nonsense girl who liked to drink, swear and constantly wear high top Nike sneakers. That winter, Lily also played her very first MySpace Secret Show at a tiny club in Seattle. It was by all means an exciting time for the singer. But a lot has changed in Lily's world since, as proven by the performance that she put on this past Tuesday at The Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan. Lily was in New York to celebrate the release of her winning new album, It's Not Me, It's You, and to kick things off she brought in her new label mate, Trouble Andrew, to open this highly buzzed about show. Andrew had released his new self-titled album earlier that day as well, and he quickly won over the few hundred fans who had filed in early to see his set. (He also proved, if there was ever a doubt, that it is always a good move to dress like '80s-era Tony Alva.) Following Andrew's set, the charming Brooklyn pop duo Matt And Kim took the stage and began racing through a handful of songs off their infectious new album, Grand. The two spent nearly the next hour smiling through tunes like "Daylight" and "Silver Tiles," and even inspired one of the most innocent stage dives at a Secret Show ever. If you weren't lucky enough to get into this show, this is a band you must see live as soon as humanly possible. From there, Matt and Kim exited and, at just past ten, Lily sauntered out looking like a full blown pop star, decked out in a bright pink dress, leopard print sweater and snug leather gloves. Lily quickly launched into It's Not Me, It's You's opener "Everyone's At It," one of several songs she played from her new record. The one thing that became abundantly clear throughout Lily's set is just how much she has grown. Earlier songs like "LDN" and "Smile" sounded far more confident, while new favorites like "The Fear" fulfilled the promise her debut only hinted at. As Lily peered out at the crowd halfway through her set, she stopped to thank MySpace. "God knows they have helped me in my career," she added. But who wouldn't support an artist like Lily? After all, giving her all the support in the world would have been worth it, if only to see her get to this point. So then, a big thanks must go out to Lily for playing this show (as well as the two other shows she has planned overseas). Some additional props go out to the Capitol Music Group, Cornerstone Promotions, Fader, Matt and Kim, Trouble Andrew and The Bowery for making this show happen. Last but not least, thanks to TurboTax for making shows like this free for MySpace users. As always, we'll see you at the next show... |
