If this show proved anything, it's this: The Gaslight Anthem's fans don't do Spring Break.
While the rest of the students at The University Of Florida cruised down the coast to get regrettable tattoos and drink light beer, a few hundred fans lined up outside of Common Grounds in Gainesville to see New Jersey's finest play this very intimate Secret Show. The working class punk quartet had just flown in from Europe, where they has just played a largely sold out tour. And they rewarded those fans who didn't head out of town with a near hour-long set of new hits and old favorites. Before that happened, however, their friends and current labelmates Fake Problems took the stage and churned out a brief-but-memorable set of songs (most of which were pulled from their excellent new album It's Great To Be Alive) As singer Chris Farren howled away, basisst Derek Perry pulled off a whole array of bad ass onstage maneuvers. Such as, well, juggling. (We may not have the photos to prove it, but trust us, he killed it.) As their set came to a close, Farren let the crowd know that Gaslight were up next and then headed into the crowd. As the members of Fake Problems milled about, a surge of fans rushed to the front of the stage. The members of Gaslight Anthem are no strangers to Common Grounds (they have played here countless times) but a lot has changed since they were last here. The '59 Sound, for starters, has become a surprise hit and as they rolled out songs like "Great Expectations," "High Lonesome" and "Here's Looking At You Kid," the crowd sung along to every word. Toward the end of their set, singer Brian Fallon gave a shout out to Fake Problems, who they have known for years. "We did a tour with them before the internet, even before Jesus," he joked. Then he dedicated one of their earliest songs, "Navesink Banks," to them. It was that sense of loyalty (to both a band like Fake Problems and scene like Gainesville's) that makes the Gaslight Anthem so easy to root for, especially as they ascend to stardom. So a big thanks to them for playing this show, as well as Fake Problems, Common Grounds and the folks at SideOneDummy. Also, this was the first show we have done in partnership with Citi Forward By MySpace, a new card that can get you all sorts of new perks. If you haven't yet checked it out, you can do so here. As for us, we'll see you at the next show! |
