When it comes to bringing you kick ass free concerts, we here at Secret Shows do not model our work ethic after Newman from Seinfeld. Seriously, that dude wouldn’t even deliver the mail if it rained. So what would happen had he found out his route was delayed by a blizzard? The guy would have probably spent a week watching TV in his apartment while eating roasted chicken with Kramer.
But not us. In fact, when it was announced that a blizzard had hit Oklahoma this weekend (and that they had called a state-wide emergency because of it), we still made sure this show was a blast. Same goes for Forever The Sickest Kids’ hugely devoted fans. The kids, though a little frostbitten, managed to make it out to The Conservatory this past Tuesday and were immediately greeted by the sounds of Theatre Breaks Loose. Now, if you haven’t sat with the local band’s 2009 album, The Way It Works, do yourself the favor: Get into it. They really are off to a promising start. But on this night, they were merely there to warm up the crowd for what was bound to be a ridiculously energetic performance from Texas’ finest pop-punk sextet. The band came out with “Tough Love” and, until they closed their set with “Whoa Oh (Me Vs. Everyone),” the entire place went bonkers. Though many of those in the crowd beat him to it, singer Jonathan Cook ended up stage-diving and hanging from the rafters during his band’s performance. In between, FTSK played a number of songs off of their latest album The Weekend: Friday, which the kids in the audience giddily sang along to. Then, to top it off, the guys in the band ended the night by getting in an old-fashioned snowball fight with a few, umm, “lucky” fans. Its hard to believe that this is our last Secret Show of 2009. Man, it was a pretty great year for this program. So thanks to everyone in the Forever The Sickest Kids camp and the good people at Universal Motown for making it happen. Also, big ups to the Conservatory and Theatre Breaks Loose for being a part of it. And, finally, a big thanks to our sponsor Citi Forward by MySpace for not only making this show, but the last year’s worth of shows, free to fans all over the country. See you next year! |
