Honestly, how long have you been waiting for this show? Weeks? Months? Years even? Whatever the case, the Secret Shows community has been asking (and, at times, even pleading) for a Fall Out Boy show for as long as anyone can remember. And this past Wednesday, at The State Theater in Saint Petersburg, the reigning kings of pop-punk finally delivered.
The band were in town to play at an outdoor amphitheater across the bay in Tampa, but they treated MySpace users to a far more intimate performance when they crashed this 600 capacity club. When the doors finally opened on Wednesday, many of the fans sprinted to get inside, and they were surely surprised by who they were greeted by. Standing onstage wearing a snugly-fitting golf cap was Tay Zonday, the man who brought you "Chocolate Rain." After singing a few bars from that unexpected internet smash, Zonday (who is currently helping our sponsor, TurboTax Federal Free Edition, with appearances like this) then introduced the night's opener, DJ Dan Suh. Suh, who has long been close with the Fall Out boy guys, spent the next hour weaving in and out of a set that included hits by Jay-Z, the Ting Tings and even Jimmy Eat World. As he alternated between each artist you could hear the crowd reacting to his every move. (Which, truth be told, was pretty impressive considering that he consumed an entire bottle of champagne during his set.) From there, Suh packed up his gear and out came the members of Fall Out Boy who, for the next hour, pretty much blew everyone away. The thing that you often forget about Fall Out Boy is that, after nearly ten years together, they have amassed a ridiculously deep catalog of hits. And so, on this night, they tore through nearly all of them, jumping from "Sugar We're Goin' Down" to "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" to "Dance, Dance" in quick succession. Per usual, bassist Pete Wentz had all sorts of entertaining things to say to the crowd during their performance. But the most memorable moment of the night came when he tossed his bass to Suh and leapt into the crowd. After leading the kids in a sing along during "Saturday" Wentz and his bandmates bailed to the parking lot, where they signed some autographs before exiting in a waiting van. They also churned out a handful of songs from their excellent new album, Folie A Deux, including a rollicking version of "I Don't Care" and their latest single "America's Suitehearts." This was indeed the show that everyone had waited for and a big thanks goes out to Fall Out Boy, DJ Dan Suh, Island, Crush Management and The State Theater for making it happen. Also, lets not forget our sponsor, Turbo Tax, for making such a great show free to everyone who came out. As always, we'll see you at the next show! |
