On Saturday night history was made in North Hampton. Not only had it been 20 years since the legendary indie rock act Dinosaur Jr played at a club the size of Pearl Street. But it had also been 20 years since they almost got all of their equipment knocked over by some dude stage-diving.
But what can we say? It was that kind of night in North Hampton, as the much beloved trio of J Mascis, Murph and Lou Barlow took the stage downstairs at Pearl Street and played a two hour-plus set that touched on nearly every major point in their career. Before their marathon performance kicked off, however, Brooklyn's The Antlers took the stage. In the past few weeks, the band's excellent debut Hospice has gotten a ton of attention from indie tastemakers, and it's not hard to understand why. Their set at Pearl Street was cathartic and moving and, by the end, they had even swayed some of the diehard Mascis-is-God fans lining the front of the stage. Then came the moment that many in North Hampton (including Sonic Youth's Thurston and Kim Gordon, who watched from the back) had been waiting for. For the next two hours, J, Lou and Murph cranked up the Marshalls to tinnus-inducing levels, as they rocked through many of the songs off their powerful new album, Farm. That wasn't all though: The band reached deep into their catalog, to play songs from both You're Living All Over Me and Green Mind which resulted in an unexpected circle pit and at least a handful of stagedivers. At one point, J looked back at his amp, and noticed that it was a few feet away from toppling over him. Holy crap, we almost killed J! Fortunately we didn't. But that sort of unpredictability is exactly what makes these shows so cool. So then, thanks to the band for going through with it, as well as Kevin at Jagjaguar, the members of The Antlers, Paul at Frenchkiss and all the fans in North Hampton. You guys rule. Also, a big thanks goes out to our sponsor Citi Forward by MySpace for keeping these shows free! Remember, if you want to get VIP treatment at the next show, you gotta sign up for the Citi Forward by MySpace card! As always, we’ll see you at the next show... |
