How is it possible that Dallas Green of City and Colour and Fred Mascherino from The Color Fred had never played a show before this?

Seriously, think about it. These are two artists that seemed destined to share a stage together, based on all the similarties they share. For starters, both of them have histories in post-hardcore bands (Green in Alexisonfire and Mascherino in Taking Back Sunday). Both started solo projects with "color" in the name. And, most important of all, both of them have totally awesome mountain man beards.

Really, who wouldn't want to a see a show featuring two such kindred spirits? I guess that explains why, a few hours before doors opened up at Beat Kitchen in Chicago, there was already a line of fans waiting around the corner. Many of those anxious fans had caught Green just two weeks earlier when he played a sold out show across town. But even they must have known how unique this evening would be.

Things started out early, when Mascherino took the stage and announced that he hadn't even planned a set list for his performance. That meant that he would often ask the crowd what they wanted to hear, resulting in a handful of songs off his infectious 2007 debut, Bend To Break, as well as one of the best Michael Jackson covers going. Near the end of the set, Mascherino even busted out "New American Classic" from his old TBS days.

Green then came onstage and, just like Mascherino, admitted that he hadn't written out a set list. So from that point, until he finally exited the stage an hour-and-a-half later, Green took requests from the crowd. Some of them came in unintelligible screams (it's amazing how many times Green said, "What was that?" to the fans) while others politely raised their hand. In the end, they got to hear just about every song Green has recorded, including a handful of tracks off his excellent 2008 album, Bring Me Your Love.

Green also dug deep into his catalog to play rarely performed songs like "Sam Malone," from City And Colour's debut album, Sometimes. After thanking the crowd one last time, he then ducked off stage and, along with Mascherino, signed autographs and took photos with everyone inside the club. This was not only the last show that Green is going to play as City And Colour for a while, but one of the more memorable shows we've had in a while. So thanks to Dallas and Fred, as well as Bedlam Management, Dine Alone, Vagrant and Equal Vision Records for making it happen. As for us, we're just getting started. So keep your eyes peeled.

We'll see you at the next show.
