This show couldn't have been better planned. You take an act like Baroness, easily one of the most respected bands in metal, and put them in a tiny bar in the middle of the country, and then give them an hour-and-a-half to tear lose? Then, to top it all off, you add a fiercely beloved hardcore band from a few states over to open? That sounds like one epic show.

Which is pretty much what occurred this past Friday when Baroness and Coliseum took the stage at Stella Blue in Asheville, North Carolina. The Georgia-bred four piece have grown accustom to much bigger rooms since 2007's Red Album was hailed by Revolver magazine as the best album of that year. But a tiny venue like Stella Blue seemed to perfectly suit Baroness' face-melting brand of rock.

Same goes for Coliseum. In fact, for a band who have probably played on their fair share of floors, they did a perfect job of warming up the crowd. Drawing on songs from their last full-length album, 2007's No Salvation they served as the perfect primer for Baroness, who took the stage shortly thereafter. This was a bit of a posthumous record release show for the group and, in turn, they played much of their new disc, Blue Record.

In fact, by the end of the night, they had played every song off the album, most of which they had never played live before. In typical Baroness fashion, they sewed them together in musical suites, giving the crowd barely any time to come up for air. But it was well worth it. Almost every time we do a Secret Show with a metal act it is highly memorable and Baroness definitely did not disappoint.
